The insurance companies have an incentive to make a profit. The peculiar history of health care financing in this country has drawn us into an economic trap where the profit of these companies have been increasing at the expense of services provided, at the ultimate expense of the sick and the poor and the chronically worried. It is not that the insurance companies are villains, per se, but their natural market incentives are leading them to stand in the way of sensible reform.
