bit emotional Frank?
300K+ rapes a year?
Rape is the most under reported crime there is. Here is a good place to get a handle on it.
http://www.rapetraumaservices.org/rape-sexual-assault.html

But you have some good points even if your logic is poor in places.

Is your position that if you ban hand guns violent crime will go down?

What do you hope to gain by banning hand guns?

I really want to know.

Thanks.

Mark

Guns protect even when not used.

"You are now six times more likely to be mugged in London than New York. Why? Because as common law appreciated, not only does an armed individual have the ability to protect himself or herself but criminals are less likely to attack them. They help keep the peace. A study found American burglars fear armed home-owners more than the police. As a result burglaries are much rarer and only 13% occur when people are at home, in contrast to 53% in England. "

So logically we might conclude that guns STOP how many burglaries? Logically they could be credited for stopping some that did not happen. BTW these do not show up on police reports. :-)

Yes, I believe we'd have many fewer violent crimes, and many fewer violent deaths if we banned handguns and simply required each household to have a rifle.

It would take 10 or 20 years to see the result, because it would take that long to flush the existing handguns out of the system.

Rapes may be under-reported, but they're not so under-reported that women would claim to use guns to stop rapes more often than the reported rapes.

How often have you heard of women stopping a rape with a gun? If it happened 322,000 times a year, you'd think it would make the headlines 10 or 20 times.

Anyway, those studies are just about worthless, at least as far as guessing how often guns are used in self-defense.

Note: These studies came out before the Internet and blogs were big. Those researchers would have been tossed to the dogs if they published studies like that today.

One other question that occurs to me: Did Justice Scalia lean on either of those studies in the District of Columbia vs. Heller decision? I'm going to check.

Frank Warner

I checked. Neither study is mentioned in the Heller decision.

Change rifle to shotgun and I would agree, it would probably work.

I have never really separated hand guns from rifles or shotguns in my thinking. I will give it some thought.

Handguns are the most prone to accidents. Many reasons. It take MUCH training to minimize the inherent risk. Rifles are only needed for targets beyond 50 yards. Not many threats to one's life 50 yards or more away.

why the gun is civilization

jj mollo

I believe that force is fundamental, but the quality of civilization depends on the mediation of that force. Carrying an obvious six-shooter does not necessarily create civilization. And, by-the-way, Hoplites with spears were able to protect a small slice of pretty decent civilization for several centuries.

I left this comment at that site, George.

It doesn't really eliminate the use of force, it just changes the rules of engagement. No one can just beat you up and take your lunch money. Now they have to shoot you. It eliminates nuisance abuse, but not abuse. Civilization depends on other things.

As to reason vs. force, there are many other channels of human interaction. How about emotion? Trickery? Peer pressure? Disrespect?

Frank Warner

Firearms aren't civilization. The nurturing of the human mind and society through literacy, free debate and democratic choices is civilization.

at all costs

I'm going to go ahead and guess that you don't live in a high crime area, Frank. I do, and I have to use my gun a lot more than I would like.

CJW

Civilization is being smart enough to know that some people aren't rational and mean to do you harm and you get to defend yourself so you are NOT a victim. Police are reactive, not proactive. Police don't write up their reports while you are being attacked. Civilization means being smart enough to take care of you and yours and not expecting someone else to do it all for you.

I hardly comment, however after reading a ton of comments
here Free Frank Warner: Benefits vs. risks of gun ownership: Are firearms used
often in self-defense? No. I do have some questions for you if it's allright. Is it only me or does it appear like a few of the responses look as if they are coming from brain dead individuals? :-P And, if you are writing on additional places, I would like to keep up with you. Could you make a list of the complete urls of your social sites like your linkedin profile, Facebook page or twitter feed?
