I don't think it's fair to characterize TNR's explanation as an admission that they are "big liars". I think they were simply trapped in a Rashomon type situation and were too immature to recognize it and cut their losses. This TNR article you cite is actually a masterpiece, an exemplar extraordinaire of pointless self-justification on the level of Crime and Punishment.
