"Richard Cohen is just catching on."

It took me a long time too. He really let conservatism down, for everything you listed except social security.

Christopher Taylor

That's essentially correct, although he's a social conservative: opposes abortion, gay marriage, etc.

That's why I was mystified by the insistence by guys like Rush Limbaugh that President Bush the younger was conservative - well, sort of. He's like his father was. He loves spending tons of government money and expanding the government size and power, but is opposed to social leftist trends.

Frank Warner

Even John Kerry opposed gay marriage in 2004. Things move on.

George W. Bush is one of the most religiously conservative presidents the U.S. has ever had. In that category, he and Jimmy Carter would be in the Top 5.

I imagine they said this exact thing in the ealry years of the Roman Empire.

To be fair though, they fell, but they never went as far as to say a man-man love affair was 'marriage'.

Just sayin'.

Frank Warner

It's fine with me if gays get married. But my point is, there are lots of liberals who still don't endorse the idea.

Just sayin' too.
