George, Osama, gay marriage...Fear Sells

Frank Warner

Each side always says the other is selling fear. But each side uses a combination of hope and fear to make its case.

The Republicans appealed to the hope for a democratic Iraq and a more peaceful world, and, in the alternative, the fear of a resumed Iraqi dictatorship and more death and terror.

The Democrats played on at least hope for a more peaceful world, and fears that Bush would cause more American casualties in Iraq than Kerry, fears that Bush would create more terrorists and Kerry wouldn't, fears that Bush would destroy Social Security, fears that Bush's judicial appointees would outlaw abortion, fears that Bush was planning a military draft.

Both major-party candidates opposed gay marriage. Only Nader favored gay marriage as a right.
