As a liberal for liberation, but nevertheless an admirer of Barack Obama, I was reminded starkly of Obama’s limitations tonight when Sarah Palin said:
“This is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting, and never use the word ‘victory’ except when he’s talking about his own campaign.
“But when the cloud of rhetoric has passed ... when the roar of the crowd fades away ... when the stadium lights go out, and those Styrofoam Greek columns are hauled back to some studio lot - what exactly is our opponent’s plan?”
Obama has said the U.S. has no choice but to win in Iraq, but that’s as far as he’ll go. Unfortunately, it is part of official Democratic Party theology that the Iraq war is evil and should be lost, even if the defeat would toss 25 million people back to oppression, war and genocide.
Responsible indifference? That indifference to freedom’s cause is hard for me to set aside, but as long as President Bush and General Petraeus appear to have secured Iraq’s democracy, and Obama is committed to a “responsible” withdrawal of U.S. forces when Iraq’s democrats say they’re ready to go it alone, liberty is likely to survive in Iraq.
There are dozens of issues to weigh in this presidential election. Palin exposed many of them tonight.
My prediction right now: Both Obama and Palin will be major players in 2012 presidential politics.
