Talk show host Dave Letterman’s racing team won the Indianapolis 500 Sunday (May 30) when racer Buddy Rice took the checkered flag.
"Are you kidding me?" Letterman, an Indianapolis native, said on the sidelines. He is part owner of the Rahal Letterman Racing Team with Bobby Rahal.
The race had to be shorted to 450 miles because of rain. It was the first Indy victory for Rice, who won the pole position filling in for the team’s injured regular driver, Kenny Brack.
"You know, I haven't had anything to drink in 30 years," Letterman said after the race. "But I feel like I’m drunk right now."
Tony Kanaan finished second, and fellow Andretti team members Dan Wheldon and Bryan Herta came in third and fourth.
It wasn’t pretty in all the rain, but for Letterman, it was a day of magic.
